Natural Rattan fiber

Natural Rattan Fiber, A Very Green Weaving Material

Natural Rattan Fiber

One of The Most Eco Friendly Material Used in Manufacturing Wicker Furniture

Natural rattan fiber is made from rattan itself. There are many kinds of natural rattan fibers. But the most used are rattan peel and rattan core. Rattan peel is the skin of rattan. It is taken from the outer skin of rattan. Special machines are needed to get high quality rattan peel from the pole. It is also one of the main material needed to manufacture high quality wicker rattan furniture. The size of this natural rattan fiber is usually from 2 mm to 7 mm wide with thickness of 1.4 mm. It is elastic, flexible, and very good to be used as material for indoor rattan furniture. Because the wicker rattan furniture is durable enough if the weaving process is highly controlled.

There are many weaving styles that we can get from using natural rattan peel. Liris or wajik or V style, kembang tanjung or sunflower style, chicken eyes style, and many others. And those styles will bring a very beautiful and artistic wicker furniture to Your home with no doubt at all. And the applications of those weaving styles are many, from simple dining chair to big sofa, and even small accessories. Natural rattan fiber is one of the best for them.

Unlike the material which is mentioned before, natural rattan core is stronger. This kind of natural rattan fiber is round. It is taken from the rattan pole by cutting it into many sizes. Of course, we need machines to do that. The sizes are various from 2.5 mm to 12 mm in diameter. But, because it is stronger, the weaving styles that we can get from using this material is not as many as from using natural rattan peel. Braid or centipede or kepang style, random or acak style, and standard straight weaving styles with all of its variations, are maybe all the styles that we can get. However, if the weaving and finishing process is highly controlled, then the products will be very beautiful too. No doubt.

We can combine those kinds of natural rattan fiber above with rattan pole or some wooden frames to achieve a beautiful and strong wicker rattan furniture. And it is best to be used as indoor furniture. If we treat it well enough, then the natural wicker furniture will last long enough for years. We also highly recommend to use the cushion for some kinds of rattan furniture, like rattan sofas and rattan chairs. It will help the natural rattan furniture last longer and to be more comfortable.

water hyacinth fiber

Water Hyacinth Fiber, Green and Beautiful Weaving Material

Water Hyacinth Fiber

A Natural Weaving Material from a Fast Growing Water Plant

Water hyacinth fiber is made from water hyacinth. It is a vegetation that lives in the lake or river. We cut it first from the leaf and the flower to get its bole, then we dry it under the sun until the color is yellow or light brown. This wicker material is delicate and fragile. So, it needs a very smooth treatment until you bring it home. You need to do this because there is no twisting or braiding process from the very first step.

However, although it is being said that this water hyacinth fiber is not really strong, or fragile, but, with right treatment and good processing, the furniture that use water hyacinth as the weaving material will be a very beautiful and unique furniture. It is because if its look that is different. It is classic with its natural color.

There are two kinds of water hyacinth fibers. Those are brankas water hyacinth fiber and twisted or braided water hyacinth fiber. Brankas water hyacinth is taken directly from the plant itself. There is no braiding or twisting. That is why that brankas water hyacinth is not as strong as braided water hyacinth. Unlike the brankas water hyacinth, twisted or braided water hyacinth is twisted to make it stronger. The perfect color is dark brown with brown wash or dark wash.

Twisted water hyacinth fiber is sometimes used in combination with some other materials. Rattan core is the most often used material as the combination. This rattan core is usually used as vertical lines of the wicker water hyacinth furniture. The frames of the furniture are many. Rattan pole often used as the frame. banana plant fiber

Banana Plant Fiber, Another Green Material for Furniture

Natural Banana Plant Fiber

Strong, eye-catching, and eco-friendly material.

Banana plant fiber is taken from banana plant skin. It is dried first and then made into weaving material. It is most often made into flat weaving material. So, usually we call it flat banana plant fiber. For additional information, although it is usually called as banana tree, it is not a tree. Since its stem does not contain true woody tissue, it is technically a plant.

Banana plant is similar to abaca plant. But, if we look closer and deeper, we will find the differences. However, to do that, we need trained eyes. Banana plants have huge leaf stalks which the stems are the base. But, the stalks of abaca are more slender. Abaca plants usually have 13-30 stalks which are radiating from central root system. And those stalks usually grow to about 13-20 feet high.

The fruits of most banana plants are edible, while the fruits of abaca plants are not edible. The fruits of abaca plants are full of seed and smaller too than the fruits of banana plants. The shape of banana plant leaves is broader with more rounded ends, while the leaves of abaca plants are narrower and smaller with more pointed ends.

As we have mentioned before on this article of abaca fiber, the color of abaca is darker shade green than banana plants. So, the banana tree fiber has more options in terms of coloring when it comes as weaving material. And because the height of banana plants can grow to 25 feet tall, which is taller than abaca plant which grow just around 15-20 feet tall, so the banana plant fiber is easier to find.

It is believed that the origin of abaca plants is Philippines. However, abaca plants grow in Indonesia too. And there are many of those abaca and banana plants here in Indonesia. So, whether You want to use abaca fiber or banana plant fiber, we are sure that we can do it for You.

From those 306 species, more than 50 species are used in manufacturing many kinds of furniture and handicrafts. For furniture, rattan pole is used most often as the frame or as the supports for the main frame of rattan furniture.

Rattan pole, beside it is used for manufacturing furniture and other rattan accessories, is also used in manufacturing other things. You can use rattan pole for filling the rod bike, or as ship back equipment, sand barrier in the deserts, and even as substitute for reinforced concrete construction. Rattan pole is amazing, isn’t it?

Rattan in its young age is also edible. The name is umbut rotan. We can find it in Aceh, Jambi, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and West Java. If we cook it right, we believe that You won’t be able to deny it. It is very delicious and very good. Just as good as umbut rotan which is made from young rattan, the furniture which use rattan pole as the frame will have light weight, good durability and strength, beautiful and delicious taste to our eyes.

Rattan has its own uniqueness if compared to other palmae plants. It can grow up to 100 meters long. From that, we have to process it before we can use it as the frame of rattan furniture. After that, that rattan pole can be combined with many other weaving materials, such as natural rattan fiber, synthetic rattan fiber, seagrass fiber, banana plant fiber, abaca fiber, and others. These combinations will give us a unique look of the wicker rattan furniture. Even without combining rattan pole with those weaving materials, rattan furniture which only use rattan pole as the frame and the additional decoration of the frame are no doubt very beautiful too.
